CRANE ACCIDENT
MARION "SCOOTER" ODOM OF HIGHLANDS ,TX AGE 41, WAS IN THE CAB OF THE CRANE
THAT CRASHED TO THE GROUND AND KILLED 4 PEOPLE. SCOOTER DIDN'T MAKE IT.
HE IS THE SON OF MY VERY BEST FRIEND, PAT. ARRANGEMENTS ARE PENDING.LINDA

MARION "SCOOTER" H. ODOM, III, 41, of Highlands, Texas died tragically on Friday, July 18, 2008 in the crane accident that took place at the LyondellBasell
Refinery in Houston. Scooter was born on May 19, 1967 in Houston, Texas to Marion H. Odom, Jr. and Patricia A. McDonald Ogburn. Having lived in a number of
states including Mississippi and Alabama, Scooter settled in Highlands two years ago. He was a crane operator with Deep South Crane & Rigging and a member of the
local Masonic Lodge. Scooter is survived by his son Dalton Odom of Kirbyville, TX, step daughter Ashton also of Kirbyville, TX, his parents Marion H. Odom, Jr. and
his wife Janice of Laurel, MS and Patricia Ogburn of Live Oak, FL, brothers, Ricky L. Odom and his wife Pam of Bruce, MS and Brandy L. Odom and his wife Amy of
Mobile, AL. Scooter is also survived by his half brother and sister, Chris Hartley and Lisa Coleman of Alabama and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation is
scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, 2008 from 4-8PM at Sterling-White Funeral Home 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Rd. Highlands, TX 77562. Funeral Services are Thursday,
July 24, 2008 10AM at Sterling-White. In Lieu of Flowers donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (national headquarters) 6931 Arlington Road Bethesda,

Gladys Stehle's family celebrated her life with friends and loved ones among many beautiful flowers and well wishes.She will be missed by
many. Gladys was quite the lady. she quilted, canned foods, and wrote a news column as well as being a very active church member.Godspeed

109 EGGS ON THE DUNE AREA BEHIND A SAND FENCE.
I HAD TO WAIT FOR A RIDE TO GALVESTON SO MY
NEW FRIEND OSCAR KIND OF KEPT ME ON LAND
WHILE I WAITED. MY FRIEND PETE HAD THE LOCAL
COPS CLOSE MY AREA OF THE BEACH; THANKS PETE!
MY FRIEND JIM POURED SOME WATER ON ME TO COOL
ME DOWN. THE MEDIA EVEN CAME TO TAKE PHOTOS!
MY EGGS WERE GINGERLY REMOVED AND CARRIED TO PADRE ISLAND TO A HATCHERY, I WILL GET
TAGGED TONIGHT AND WILL BE BACK IN THE OCEAN TOMORROW. I THINK I TIP THE SCALES
AROUND 120 POUNDS. I APPRECIATE THE GOOD CARE!

Promises
The new mayor said he could fix things immediately and he can get water to the buildable land and he can
open the collection point.  Well we are waiting. Give the man a chance to prove up his points. Being in his position
is not easy. Remember his is an open door and you can discuss your problems with him, take your issues to him.

Just an FYI ;
FORMER MAYOR BEDWARD GAVE FREE INTERNET SERVICE TO THE EMPLOYEES
AT CITY HALL. THE NEW MAYOR DAVISON DECIDED TO CHANGE TO ANOTHER SERVICE WHICH
WILL COST THE CITY MONTHLY AND WILL COST FOR INSTALLATION AND THAT IS HIS
CHOICE; HOWEVER IN RESPONSE TO WHEN THE COUNCIL ADDRESSED THIS EXPENSE?
WE WERE TOLD BY A COUNCIL MEMBER IT WAS NOT A GIVEN TO COUNCIL TO DECIDE.
WE WERE PLEASED TO GIVE THE SERVICE AND WOULD HAVE CONTINUED TO DO SO.WE
WERE CALLED AND TOLD OF THE NEW SERVICE BY AN EMPLOYEE
AND JIM REMOVED HIS WIRING AND EQUIPMENT FROM THE BUILDING
AS IT WAS NO LONGER REQUIRED. AS I SAID JIM REMOVED ALL EQUIPMENT AND
WIRING DUE TO THE NEW SERVICE HAVING ITS OWN EQUIPMENT.
IF SECURITY WAS THE REASONING BEHIND CHANGING; THEN MAY I REMIND THE MAYOR
AND  EMPLOYEES AT CITY HALL THAT EMAILS AND OTHER INFORMATION FROM
THEIR COMPUTERS IS PUBLIC INFORMATION. JUST RECENTLY WE ALL WERE
REMINDED OF THAT IN HOUSTON WITH THE DEMISE OF THE HARRIS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY. THANKS FOR ALLOWING JIM TO SHARE FREE INTERNET WITH THE
CITY FOR TWO YEARS.

Hi Linda, the site looks really good, only 3 of the many photos did not load.

Reading about the water problem, many politicians will say anything to get
elected, our Federal and state governments are the best example.
They swore to uphold the Constitution and get elected, take the oath of office
and then do whatever the person with the most money wants them to do.  Open borders!
I congratulate Jim on trying to help the city with the internet.

Not to be glib but he did get elected ; narrow  win tho it was! I guess my thoughts on that article is ; that is the
man's opinion  based on  the remarks he read  in the paper and he has a right to express it.
How much he knows of the real facts I don't know, that is what he surmised from the statements the
mayor purportedly made to the Facts reporter. He did sound like he was astounded by the remarks.LMB

I am new to Surfside Beach, but over the last two years I've had the opportunity to get to know many members of City Council, as well as the current Mayor and some city employees. I couldn't disagree more with the recent comments made by others, which seem purely malicious in content. I do not know of any alcoholics or felons now serving on Council. It is my impression that we have a very good and capable council and Mayor, who are working hard to clean up the mess created over the last few years.
In the past perhaps not all of the proper procedures were followed correctly, but I suspect this was due to the lack of knowledge of previous city officials (and not shady
dealings as has been suggested), who have since been voted out of office. It looks to me as if Surfside is finally on the right track!

Scott, I guess that is someone elses opinion and not mine, however we all have opinions. If you are speaking of the mayor (Bedward) being voted out, he was voted out by 8 votes and  I can tell you one thing he is not shady neither is he an alcoholic. If you are new here I would say what the home folks usually say, "you may not have been here long enough to know what goes on." I can tell you for sure if you think our problems are from the last two or few years you need to bone up on what goes on. The sitting council members were the only ones sitting in the last two years so you are blaming them too. The problems in Surfside  have been building for various reasons for many years. The person who sent me that email has a right to an opinion just as you and I do. I can see about gettting a check ran on the council members if it concerns you what one person says. In fact I will do that this week, I was not concerned but   now I will look into it.
By the way I notice you are using Bill's email and the "voted out" mayor offered and hired Bill for a position with the city and I believe Bill got a better offer. Maybe you should just disregard the opinion as we all do. I think shady dealings have been going on in this town and others since time began!I think proper procedures have been disregarded and not followed many times over either on purpose and sometimes from lack of knowlege, but that would be my opinion. Again Scott, everyone has a right to an opinion and I respect you for having one and for speaking out. Most hide and get someone else to speak out for them. Being and elected official does not mean you are perfect nor does it mean you are always procedurally correct .Losing your position does not mean you are shady or improper if so you are saying  the current mayor was in that class when he lost but lost on a much larger scale? Stick around a short time and maybe you will see whose opinions were right. By the way did you vote? I sure hope so since you know the elected officials so well.

Linda, I assure you that this is my opinion, not Bill's. Bill and I share a computer, and as he was already logged in, I used his email account rather than switch to mine. As far as I know, he has no opinion on Surfside politics one way or the other (Bill works over the road 5 out of 7 days and does not have time for local affairs). To answer your question, though, no I did not vote as I'm not registered, but I will be sure to register in time for the next election as you suggest. What I like about Surfside is that all of its residents seem so passionate and involved in their community, and this is a good thing. Not everyone agrees on what issues should be priority, or the right way to go about it, but everyone seems to care deeply about the village and the island. Lets hope we all survive this hurricane season to care again next year! The Waggoners' comments on Cherokeesmoke just struck me as particuarly malicious, as well as one or two other peoples' comments, and that is what my opinion was in respose to. Unlike them, I was not implying that anybody was shady, improper, or alcoholic. Just the opposite, in fact. Scott.

Opinion:  Surfside Beach                                                                    July 13, 2008

Hopefully, the village leaders of Surfside Beach will learn something about the seriousness of coastal subsidence due to groundwater extraction from the Brazoria County
commissioner's court workshop held on July 8, 2008. (The Facts, July 13, 2008)

In the July 8, 2008 Surfside city council meeting, without prior public input, the council approved the purchase of land and funding to drill yet another well to supplement
our existing wells that are contaminated with saltwater and high arsenic levels. 

The mayor's designation of the decision to drill a new well as an "emergency" is a stretch at best:   This "emergency "situation certainly didn't happen overnight.  The city
should have adopted a state mandated moratorium (§212.131) on development years ago when we first encountered problems with our water supply, quality, and distribution
systems.

Surfside has seven neighboring communities and two TDCJ units that have seen the wisdom in contracting with Brazosport Water Authority to supply surface water and
avoid many of the pitfalls associated with state regulations.  Simply said; "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

  ALERT TURTLE WALKERS

   THE TURTLE WALKERS OF SURFSIDE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GO INTO HIGH GEAR
AS THE PROJECT IS SET TO START REAL SOON. WE WERE COVERING THE
JETTY BEACH DAILY. SOBA MEMBERS AND OTHER LOCAL FOLKS HAVE BEEN PATROLLING
AT LEAST TWICE EACH DAY AND WE HAVE LOGGED IN A LOT OF HOURS. I ORDERED SOME
NEW SHIRTS AND THEY ARE HERE. IF YOU ARE WALKING THE BEACH LET US KNOW WHAT
SIZE SHIRT YOU NEED. THE SHIRTS ARE BRIGHT ORANGE AND WILL BE EASILY RECOGNIZED
BY WORKERS ON THE BEACH. THE REVETMENT SHOULD BE STARTING UP REALSOON.

BUSINESS WIDE OPEN. THE WEDDING PART OF THE BUSINESS IS STILL AVAILABLE. THEY HAVE
BIG PLANS. DAVID DEVANEY ALSO IS INVOLVED IN THIS VENTURE OWNED BY PAT HARRISON WHO
ALSO OWNS WAREHOUSE ASSOCIATES.
